The Social Security Administration (SSA) sends monthly payments to millions of beneficiaries, including retired workers and survivors. Survivors include children, spouses, widows, widowers, or parents of any deceased beneficiary.
The SSA also sends out on a monthly basis disability benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
As 2023 ends, the SSA has already shared the next year’s benefits payment schedule. Here is an explanation of the schedule and issuing dates month by month in 2024.
Social Security: what is the final payment schedule for 2024?
SSI payments are scheduled by the SSA to be sent out on the first day of every month. In the event that the first day falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, the payment will be issued on the previous business day. However, recipients who started receiving payments before May 1997 are paid on the 3rd of each month, even if it falls on a weekend or holiday.
For those who collect Social Security benefits (retiree, survivors, or SSDI) and SSI at the same time, the SSI payment is sent on the first day of the month and the Social Security payment on the third day.
The rest of the Social Security checks are sent on Wednesdays, according to the date of birth of the beneficiaries:
- Second Wednesday of the month: retirees with a date of birth between the 1st and 10th
- Third Wednesday: beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th day
- Fourth Wednesday: retirees born between the 21st and 31st
If Wednesday is a holiday, payment is advanced to the first business day before.

January
- Wednesday, January 3: Payees who began receiving payments before May 1997

- Wednesday 17: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between 11 and 20
- Wednesday 24: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between 21 and 31
The January 2024 Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment is mailed on December 29, 2023, since January 1 is a holiday. These beneficiaries will be the first to see the 2024 COLA applied to their payment. The COLA will be announced by the SSA in mid-October.

The vast majority of Social Security payments are sent via direct deposit, with only one percent being sent a physical check.
