Monday, April 15 is almost upon us, and this is the date that all taxpayers must keep in mind if they want to be in the good graces of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Residents in most states have to file state tax returns as well. Majority of them must meet the same April 15 deadline, though a handful of states have different dates set as the last day to receive returns.

Texas is one of the few states that do not levy income tax on their residents. The eight others are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, and Wyoming.

The Texas state constitution has a provision that explicitly forbids personal income taxes. This means no state income tax is withheld from the paychecks of residents, and there is no need to file a state income tax return.

However, just like other US residents, Texans must pay federal income tax and file the corresponding return by Monday, April 15.

Those who are unable to meet this deadline can request an extension to submit their return. You must fill out Form 4868 electronically or by snail mail by April 15. Accomplishing this form can give you some breathing room, as it can give taxpayers six more months to complete and send their return. This form can still be filed after Monday, but this might already incur a penalty for late submission.

Texas is one of the states that can avail of Direct File, a new IRS service that allows eligible taxpayers to prepare and file their tax return online for free, including access to help from IRS Direct File customer support representatives.

The IRS reminds taxpayers that the extension only applies to turning in the tax return, and not to the payment of any taxes owed, which will not budge from the April 15 cut-off.
