The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a new recall of portable adult bed rails, the 9th since 2021, after one death and serious injuries were reported related to those made by Medical King, of Brooklyn, New York. These recalls along with two product warnings, have impacted over 3 million of these important devices used in assisted or residential care settings and private homes to help prevent falls or injuries.

The affected portable adult bed rails in the recalls “are associated with serious injuries from head, neck, or chest entrapment” said the CPSC. The latest recall was due to entrapment and asphyxia hazards. Of the 18 reported deaths so far, “92% of fatalities associated with adult portable bed rails are from entrapment usually of the head or neck,” states the agency.

The recall announced on Thursday issued by CPSC and Home 4U, Inc. which goes under the trade name of Medical King, affects three models of Medical King Bed Assist Rail. The recall includes two of the Bed Assist Rail with Adjustable Heights model numbers 7007 and 7057 and one of the Bed Assist Rail Without Legs model, number 7037.

However, “there are no model numbers or brand-specific labels on the recalled bed rails,” advises the recall notice. But consumers can identify them by their characteristics or checking the recall advisory webpage.

“The Bed Assist Rail with Adjustable Heights is made of black or white metal tubing with a rounded black foam rubber grip handle and a fabric pouch,” says the CPSC. On the other hand, “the Bed Assist Rail Without Legs is made of silver metal tubing with a black foam rubber grip handle and a black fabric pouch.”

Roughly 220,000 models of the recalled portable adult bed rails were sold between January 2020 and March 2024. The units were manufactured in China and sold online trough Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Target Plus, eBay, Kohls.com and medicalkingusa.com at the cost of around about $40.

If you have one of these recalled portable adult bed rails, you should stop using it immediately and contact Medical King. You can file out this online registration form, call 888-334-1142 or email MedicalKing@Expo23.com. The company is offering a free repair kit or a replacement bed rail, depending on the model.
