The Sierra de la Culebra, in Spain’s Zamora Province, has become a premier wildlife destination thanks to its exceptional concentration of Iberian wolves.

Tourists flock to this corner of Spain to see wolves
Located in the northwestern part of Zamora Province, the Sierra de la Culebra is one of Spain’s most important wildlife sanctuaries. Covering nearly 163,000 acres of mountains, forests, and scrubland, the area is internationally recognized for having the highest concentration of wolves in Western Europe.
Combined with its low human population density, this unique characteristic has made the region a popular destination for both domestic and international travelers eager to observe these predators in their natural habitat.

Binoculars and plenty of patience
While spotting wolves in the wild is never guaranteed, visitors have a relatively high chance of seeing them. Guided excursions are typically scheduled around sunrise and sunset, when the animals are most active.
To avoid disturbing the wolves’ natural behavior, local guides and tour operators conduct observations from considerable distances. Groups gather at elevated viewpoints and designated observation sites, many of them near towns such as Villardeciervos, equipped with spotting scopes and binoculars. The experience requires patience, quiet observation, and respect for the natural environment.
An economic boost for local communities
Interest in the Iberian wolf has provided a significant economic boost to the regions of Aliste, Carballeda, Tábara, and Sanabria. The steady stream of photographers, naturalists, and tourists has benefited local communities, encouraging the development of rural accommodations and businesses specializing in nature-based tours.
Although wolves are the Sierra’s main attraction, they are far from the only reason to visit. Travelers who set up their optics throughout the mountains of Zamora also have the opportunity to observe wild boar, foxes, large eagles, and thriving populations of red deer and roe deer.
