$5,000 for mothers in the United States: This is Trump’s new proposal
In an effort to encourage people to have more children, the Trump administration is reportedly considering a $5,000 check for mothers.

The Donald Trump administration is considering offering a “baby bonus” to encourage Americans to have more children. According to ABC News, the proposal has already been presented to White House advisors, and when asked about the idea, President Trump showed support for the measure.
This incentive follows the United States’ record-low birth rate in 2023, though initial numbers show a slight increase in 2024. Nevertheless, the decrease in birth rates in the US and Europe has become a focal point of many within the president’s inner circle, including billionaire Elon Musk. For years, Musk has said that declining birth rates are a threat to ‘western civilization,’ but rarely talks about initiatives that increase birth rates, without infringing on the bodily rights of half the population, by curtailing rights to abortion.

What is the ‘baby bonus’?
The “baby bonus” would consist of a one-time payment of $5,000 for American mothers who give birth to a child. However, many critics do not think the amount is sufficient, and believe that more generous payments, which could take the form of tax credits, would be needed to encourage young people to have children. Under the Biden administration, the federal child tax credit was briefly increased to $3,600 for children under six and $3,000 for those between six and seventeen. Though only in effect for one year, these enhanced payments were able to slash child poverty in half. However, after the program expired, poverty rates have begun to tick up once again.
According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, in addition to encouraging people to have more children, this new proposal also aims to help “American families” with the initial costs of having a child.
“The president wants America to be a country where all children can safely grow up and achieve the American dream,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who also noted that as a mother she was “proud to work for a president who is taking significant action to leave a better country for the next generation.”
Trump has not yet made a decision
While the “baby bonus” is already being considered by Trump’s advisors, the president has yet to make a decision on it, so for now, it remains a proposal.
During the campaign, Vice President JD Vance voiced support for sending financial benefits to families, calling it the “task of [the] government to make it easier for young moms and dads to afford to have kids.”
