In addition to the health crisis, the covid-19 pandemic brought with it economic problems, to which the US government responded by approving three stimulus checks with the aim of providing economic assistance to those most in need.

Although the pandemic has reached manageable levels, inflation continues to be high and many families continue to have difficulties with putting food on the table. This has prompted some states to offer their own help in the absence of a fourth federal stimulus check.

6 states with stimulus check projects for 2023: Which states and how much?

California

In-state residents can get a payment of $200 to $1,050, depending on their eligibility criteria, such as income, marital status, and number of dependents. The payment is made possible by the “Middle Class Tax Rebate,” which will be available to taxpayers who filed their 2020 tax return before October 15, 2021 and lived in California full-time for a minimum of six months in 2020. Payments will be issued in the first half of 2023.

Idaho

The state government offers one-time payments of $75 for each family member, or the equivalent of 12% of the taxpayer’s tax liability. Note that the payments will arrive as a tax refund for taxpayers who filed their taxes on time.

Maine

Due to extreme winter weather, the state approved the “Winter Energy Relief Payment” to award one-time checks of $450 for single taxpayers and $900 for couples.

Eligible individuals must have AGI less than $100,000 for individuals in 2021, $150,000 for heads of household, or $200,000 for married couples filing jointly.

New Jersey

Homeowners or renters can obtain a check in the state of New Jersey. If you owned or rented a home in the state in 2019 and reported maximum income up to $150,000, you can receive up to $1,500.

New Mexico

The state plans to give two refunds for 2023, providing you have your 2021 tax return by May 31, 2023. The first refund is $500 for joint filers, head of family or surviving spouses; and $250 for single taxpayers and married couples filing separate tax returns.

The second has not yet been approved, but if given the green light, it would provide a refund of up to $1,000 for joint taxpayers, head of household, and surviving spouses; and $500 for single residents and married couples filing separately in 2021.
