In addition to retired workers, the Social Security Administration (SSA) issues millions of payments to people with disabilities. They fall into the category of recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

The size of the checks varies depending on each person’s situation. However, year after year, the SSA makes an adjustment to prevent beneficiaries from losing out because of inflation, the cost of living adjustment (COLA).

Following the 2023 COLA increase, retired workers’ average monthly payments remained at $1,827, while SSI beneficiaries are receiving an average monthly check of $914.

The October SSI check of $914 will be issued automatically on Friday, 29 September.

The distribution of payments is given according to the date of birth of the beneficiaries. Those who were born between the 1st and 10th, receive the money on the second Wednesday of the month, while those whose birth date is from the 11th to the 21st do so on the third Wednesday. People born from the 21st to the 31st receive theirs on the fourth Wednesday.

Those who retired before May 1997, as well as SSI beneficiaries, do not fall into the previous scheme since they receive the money during the first day of the month. However, when the first day of the current month falls on a weekend, the SSA moves payments forward, as is the case for the October checks.
