After more than a decade in a transplant unit, a nurse discovers a new rhythm – and far more income – by running her own laundry service.

A 38-year-old woman quits her job, buys a laundromat, and ends up earning over $450,000 a year: “I only work 6 hours a week”
Cami, a 38-year-old nurse from Arizona who spent 13 years in a major hospital’s bone-marrow transplant unit, has completely reinvented her life, as she told CNBC. Caring for people is meaningful work and not everyone is cut out for it, but earning more while working far fewer hours was something she simply couldn’t overlook.
She says making the business her only job has been a welcome shift in pace after years of working almost full time at the hospital. “Now I only work about five or six hours a week,” she says, after years spent building up the laundry service.
During that time, she hired six employees, including one part-timer, so she could “focus more on growing the business and not working in it.” She adds that she spends around 10 hours a week creating and posting videos on social media about the business and what it’s like to run it.
How much is the laundrette making?
The laundry brought in roughly $435,000 in revenue last year, with about $150,000 in profit, part of which she reinvested and part of which became her salary. She also earned about $27,000 from six months of social-media posts in 2024 and is on track for a major jump – “about $253,000” – in 2025, she says.
“This is the first time I can be home for all the holidays and have every weekend off. I never have to ask a boss or manager if I can take a last-minute trip home or anything like that. So my freedom over my time has completely changed,” she says.
