A lottery ticket someone else rejected just made this Michigan man a millionaire

It sounds like something out of a movie. A 33-year-old man from Wayne County, Michigan, won $1 million after buying a scratch-off ticket that another customer had turned down. The twist of fate unfolded at a gas station in Detroit and seems almost too lucky to be real.

The winning ticket was a Blazing Suits instant game. It had been set aside on the counter at Fawaz Petroleum, a neighborhood gas station, but the original customer decided not to take it. The man who eventually bought it scratched it at home—and said he “couldn’t believe it” when he realized it held the top prize.

Speaking with the Michigan Lottery, he admitted he never expected anything close to this: “I never would have thought I’d win such a large lottery prize, so it’s truly a blessing.”

He chose the lump-sum option instead of annual payments. While the ticket carried a $1 million prize, the one-time payout comes to roughly $693,000 after state and federal taxes.

For him, the moment is both exhilarating and overwhelming. “Winning is a great feeling, but it’s also a lot of pressure because your mind starts thinking of all the different things you can do with this amount of money,” he shared.

Right now, he plans to save most of it and give himself time to decide how to handle this unexpected financial opportunity.
