A man picks up a second-hand filing cabinet and is surprised by the money he finds inside: “I feel bad about all the fuss”

Steven, a 24-year-old California resident, never expected that picking up a free office filing cabinet would leave him with such bittersweet feelings just days later.

In his search for a secondhand filing cabinet to store his art supplies, he found the perfect match on Facebook Marketplace—or rather, his mother did. She spotted the listing and tipped him off. “It was one of those ‘Everything’s free, everything must go’ posts,” he told Newsweek.

After a long drive, Steven and his mother arrived at the home of the person who had posted the giveaway on social media. “At first, I hesitated to take it because I wasn’t sure where I’d put it, but I grabbed it since the lady there told me it was free,” he recalled.

Surprise hidden inside filing cabinet

However, the filing cabinet wasn’t as empty as he’d thought. When he went to store his sketchbooks, he discovered some hidden tins on the top shelf—inside them was $521 in cash.

Steven took to Reddit to share several photos of the filing cabinet and its unexpected contents, including a handwritten note that, according to him, seemed to list the amount of money and the dates it had been stashed away.

He tried, unsuccessfully, to reach the person who had given him the cabinet. “I feel bad for unintentionally stirring up so much commotion in the post and comments,” he explained. “My goal is to contact her so I can return it,” he emphasized.

Since he can’t visit in person, Steven is waiting to see if the seller responds online before deciding his next steps.
