A Target employee has shared a photo of the disastrous state of the warehouse, sparking outrage amongst shoppers.
There’s a Reddit channel for everything, even Target. Recently, one employee revealed that a mystery error resulted in losses above $100,000.
While they didn’t explain what happened, it seems like the most likely reason behind the shocking scene was a power outage that caused a number of bins to be filled with perishable foods, ready to be thrown out.
There was no description of the situation from ‘OP’, but one user said that "We lost our full fridge/freezer to power outage about three(?) months ago and it was awful. It took over a month to get our stuff restocked and for about 3 weeks you couldn’t order any cold goods online."
“Absolute pain trying to explain to people that we can’t just magically make everything reappear back in the store and that even the stuff in back had to be thrown out and we can’t just ‘pull out some backstocks’.”
"That’s honestly a good thing it takes awhile to restock. Imagine having a 2000 piece truck. (That may be normal for you but for my store it’s 375 average for dairy/meat/produce/freezer combined)“, came the reply from one user. ”I wish there was a better way to deal with this. Like calling a local food bank to come pick it up if you catch it soon enough. Seems like such a waste", added another.
Despite Target having achieved its goal of cutting operational food waste in half compared to its 2017 baseline, it’s not known why this food waste was not donated.
As of February 2025, Target operates 1,978 stores across the United States. California has the highest number of Target locations, with 318 stores, accounting for approximately 16% of all Target stores nationwide.
