Update:

In a story that sounds like a deleted scene from a sitcom, a woman in Qingdao, China came home to find her kitchen taken over by 70 newly hatched chicks – all apparently from store-bought eggs. Yes, supermarket eggs.

A reminder where eggs come from

As the story goes, Mrs Jiang had picked up three cartons of eggs before heading out for a short trip. Two days later, she returned to high-pitched chirping and what looked like a fluffy yellow stampede across the floor. “I thought I was hallucinating,” she told Chinese media.

The eggs had been sitting out in the summer heat, and – against all odds – that heat had essentially turned her kitchen into a giant incubator. Out of 90 eggs, 70 managed to hatch. Before you start panicking, know that most grocery store eggs are infertile, so what happened here is extremely rare.

What did she do with the chicks?

It seems from the report that Mrs Jiang wasn’t entirely unprepared. She and her family scrambled (sorry!) to create a makeshift chick shelter with old sweaters and fed them warm rice porridge using syringes.

In the end, two of the chicks became house pets, while the rest were relocated to her parents’ rural home. They’re doing fine, apparently. Eggstraordinary!
