Actor Tamayo Perry dies from a shark attack: here’s what we know
The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor has died after a shark attacked him in Hawaii.
‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor Tamayo Perry has died after being attacked by a shark on a Hawaii coastline.
Emergency services were called to Malaekahana Beach at around 13:00 local time. However, the actor was pronounced dead after he was brought back to shore on the island of Oahu.
Shayne Enright of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department said in a statement that Tamayo Perry, who was 49 and the City and County of Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguard, died following the attack near Goat Island.
Which species of shark attacked and killed Tamayo Perry?
Reports say Perry suffered various shark bites and that he even had an arm and a leg missing, Stab Magazine reported.
It is not known which species of shark attacked Perry, but the island state is home to around 40 species including the Great White, Tiger Shark and Mako, with the former two being the more notorious when it comes to biting humans. However, shark attacks are not to be feared: Hawaii sees typically less than ten per year.
Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety chief Kurt Lager said Perry was “loved by all”, adding that “Tamayo’s personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more. Our condolences go out to Tamayo’s family.” Perry, who featured in various productions such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Hawaii 5-0, made his career on the North Shore as a professional surfer before becoming a lifeguard.
Ocean Safety personnel put out shark warnings in the area after the attack, Enright confirmed before saying “as you can imagine, this is [an] extremely difficult time for all of us. I ask for your kindness and your patience as we all just try to get through this next hour into these next weeks and months.”
