Update:

In Donald Trump’s ever-tightening economy, it is becoming both pertinent and prudent for many to buy things that last for life.

This, of course, includes the cars we buy. There is little sense in forking out a huge sum for a shiny new motor that is going to cost you down the line, and many are now putting longevity along with affordability atop their list of priorities.

While it’s not an exact science, some cars are certainly more robust and reliable than others (sorry, FIAT/Lotus/Alfa Romeo) and they’re the choice when it comes to looking at which vehicles can break that coveted 200,000 mile mark without breaking a sweat. Luckily, there are plenty of options. And yes, most of them are Japanese.

According to experienced technicians, the Toyota 4Runner is one of the most dependable SUVs around. Its engines and transmissions are known for being rugged and surprisingly trouble-free, and it is a go-to choice for long-term ownership. I’d even put my own opinion in here and say that the Toyota Hilux is a monster of a car, which has survived plenty of high-profile scrapes.

Sedans like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Toyota Corolla also make the list. Proven powertrains and simple, durable designs are the key ingredients behind their famed longevity. Consumer data reflects this fact, with models from Honda and Toyota dominating the list of vehicles most likely to last past 200,000 miles.

For fans of all-wheel drive, Subaru also holds strong. Mechanics believe models like the Outback or Impreza, once past certain weak spots, can run smoothly and reliably long into high mileage. And that classic blue/gold colourway is a classic.

It’s not just cars: trucks and workhorses get a shout-out too. Chevrolet’s 2500 and 3500-series pickups are built to cover serious ground.
