Update:

If you’re going to a sporting event in what remains of this year, be on the lookout for aliens. At least you should be if you believe what the internet says about the prophecies of Baba Vanga, the blind Bulgarian mystic who died in 1996.

Because apparently, she predicted that this year, 2025, is the moment our species will finally meet extraterrestrials. And not only that, but the encounter will happen at a sporting event. Of course.

Unfortunately, nobody online seems able to quote exactly what she said. Most websites that breathlessly mention the prophecy simply cite another website that claims she definitely said it. Well, at least they’ve tried to find a source. Journalism 101.

Also note that Baba Vanga apparently predicted World War III in 2010, so her batting average isn’t exactly Hall of Fame level.

If the prediction is true, the aliens already skipped the Super Bowl (don’t go blaming Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show), Wimbledon, and the NBA Finals — possibly due to ticket prices, which are astronomical, even by galactic standards.

There’s also the possibility they’ve already been here, but things went terribly wrong, like the disaster that befell two warring alien races in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy where they arrived on Earth only to be swallowed by a small dog due to “a terrible miscalculation of scale.”

Another self-proclaimed mystic jumps on the meeting-aliens-in-2025 bandwagon

Predictions of alien contact in 2025 have also come from Brazilian self-proclaimed fortune teller Salomé, who calls himself the Living Nostradamus.

In his wide-ranging predictions for 2025, he told the Daily Mail: “Thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope, humanity might finally get the answer to the existence of alien life, while governments like the U.S. may declassify UFO files. If true, these discoveries could revolutionize one’s view about the universe in which we exist — and about ourselves.”

For a man who claims psychic powers, Salomé’s take is downright reasonable. No vague sporting events, no cryptic metaphors about “the tremulous man in blue meeting the moon goddess” — just a bet on the most powerful telescope ever built. Compared to Baba Vanga’s mystery sporting event, it’s practically a TED Talk.

And he might just be right. The James Webb Space Telescope is an incredible piece of technology, capable of detecting objects up to 100 times fainter than the Hubble, and that power means it could one day remotely pick up signs of alien activity.

According to SETI, the collaborative Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence project, the three most likely ways of detecting alien activity are spotting radio or laser signals, finding infrared megastructures, and identifying industrial pollutants or city lights.

To quote Douglas Adams again: “Space is big. Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist’s, but that’s just peanuts to space.”

Which means that traveling from one part of space to another is mind-bogglingly hard, even if you’re an advanced alien race, and so we’re far more likely to spot aliens via remote detection than by seeing a UFO hover over the Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Dallas Cowboys on September 4.
