After the election of Donald Trump, some are dreaming of escaping the United States.

A town in Italy is attempting to attract new residents from the US by offering run down and dilapidated homes for $1. If the buyer commits to renovating the property, they will be offered a path to residency as a reward for investing in the small town. While this type of offer exists across the Mediterranean country, one town, Ollolai located in the region of Sardinia, is directing their messaging to those upset with the political situation in the United States. The town is home to a little over 1,000 residents.

Upon entering the city’s webpage for the program, one begins to understand the target audience.

The basics of the program

“Are you worried about global politics? Looking to embrace a more balanced lifestyle while securing new opportunities?” reads the site. The city believes that for many, their new beginnings can begin in Ollolai where future residents can “start building [their] European escape in the stunning paradise of Sardinia.”

Many regions of Italy lack an economic base that would be capable of converting many of these properties into livable homes, and it is looking across the Atlantic to attract the funds necessary. However, for those willing to pay a little more, as much as $100,000 properties that are advertised as “move-in ready” will also be made available. “Whether you’re searching for a €1 house to renovate or a move-in-ready home, we’ll guide you through every step of your journey, from arranging viewings to finding contractors and navigating the necessary bureaucracy,” reads the website.

The properties that will be put on the market for foreigners are not yet posted, but officials running the project are encouraging those interested to get in touch.
