Biden’s address was his first public address in the Oval Office since announcing his withdrawal from the presidential election in July of last year.

The president began his address by talking about the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas. Earlier on Wednesday, Biden attributed the deal to months of “dogged and painstaking American diplomacy” in reaching the agreement. He also clarified that his administration and President-elect Donald Trump’s team had been “speaking as one” in recent negotiations.

Biden also paid tribute to Vice President Kamala Harris and said she has been a great partner. Harris took Biden’s place in the presidential race, but ultimately lost to Trump.

“Now it’s your turn to be on guard. May you all be the keepers of the flame. May you keep the faith. I love America. You love it too. God bless you all. May God protect our troops. Thank you for this great honor,” Biden concluded.

What day does Donald Trump take office as President of the United States?

The winner of the presidential election takes office on Inauguration Day, which occurs every four years. The Twentieth Amendment to the Constitution establishes that the presidential term ends on January 20, the same date on which the next term begins.

The terms of office of the President and Vice President shall expire at noon on the 20th day of January [...] of the years in which such terms would have expired if this article had been ratified; and then the terms of their successors shall begin,” Section 1 states.

Therefore, Trump’s presidential inauguration will be on January 20, 2025. The inauguration ceremony will take place at the United States Capitol in Washington, DC at around 12:00 p.m. ET.
