Ane Gastesi, dentist: Maintaining good chewing habits in older people has benefits for preventing cognitive decline
Growing old with a healthy smile can be one of the keys to keeping your mind active for longer, explains a dental expert.

The connection between oral health and overall well‑being is gaining increasing attention as scientific research continues to advance. For older adults, maintaining strong chewing ability isn’t just essential for proper nutrition - it may also play a key role in preventing cognitive decline.
However, dental care in later life remains an unmet need. That’s the warning from dentist Ane Gastesi, who highlights how little focus is placed on this population. “Older people are largely forgotten when it comes to dental care, and as a professional, that really saddens me,” she says.
A growing body of research has shown that active chewing stimulates brain regions tied to memory and cognitive function. When this ability diminishes - whether due to missing teeth, poorly fitted dentures, or untreated oral problems - the brain receives fewer stimuli, potentially accelerating cognitive deterioration.
More than an aesthetic issue
For Gastesi, the goal is straightforward: preserve natural teeth for as long as possible. “An older adult should be able to keep their own natural, fixed teeth whenever feasible,” she explains. It’s not just about appearance - it’s a matter of overall health. “Being able to chew properly is essential because this oral stimulus supports adequate nutrition and also has a positive impact on cognitive health,” she adds.
Losing teeth or struggling with poor chewing ability can also restrict a person’s diet, often reducing intake of nutritious solid foods such as fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Over time, this can lead to nutritional deficiencies that directly affect brain function and overall quality of life.
