Companies and brands must pay some customers after a lawsuit, if they were found to not have complied with the terms of their services or advertisements. Such is the case of Apple, which reached an agreement to pay $25 million to customers who meet a few specifications.

Apple published “misleading” ads about its Family Sharing subscription, which supposedly applied to all subscription-based apps in the App Store. However, most apps do not support sharing.

“Plaintiffs purchased the apps based on a false advertisement created by Apple and placed on the app’s home pages by Apple and/or at Apple’s behest, and did not receive the benefit from its offerings, which is equivalent to a usable version of the software in question for up to six family members,” lawyers alleged in Walter Peters’ lawsuit against Apple Inc.

Who qualifies to receive the Apple payout?

According to the class action website, customers who were enrolled in a Family Sharing group with at least one other person between June 21, 2015 and January 30, 2019 are eligible to receive a payment.

To be qualified, they must also be a resident of the United States during that time and have purchased a subscription to an app (other than one published by Apple) through the App Store during that time.

How much will the payment be and how do I claim it?

The class action’s FAQ page notes that users could receive up to $30, depending on how many people opt to receive a payment and the amount of deductions approved by the court.

Eligible customers will receive an email notice with more information about the settlement. If you do not receive a notice and believe you are eligible, you can register on the class action website by printing and mailing a form.

Customers have until March 1, 2024 to file a claim. A hearing is scheduled for April 2, 2024 to finalize the agreement. Claimants who file after the deadline will not receive compensation.

If you are eligible for a payment, you can choose between two payment methods: via electronic transfer or a check.
