Just in time for holiday spending, tech giant Apple has been stung with an order to stop the sales of their watches that include a blood oxygen feature. Despite an appeal expected, the company will remove the devices from their site on 21 December, five days before the ban comes into effect. The watches may still be sold at other stores.

“Apple strongly disagrees with the order and is pursuing a range of legal and technical options to ensure that Apple Watch is available to customers,” Apple said.

The Apple watches that are effected

  • Apple Watch Series 9
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2

The US’s International Trade Commission agreed with California-based medical device firm Masimo that Apple had violated patent rights. It is estimated that the Apple Watch business is worth $10 billion.

What has Apple said about the ruling?

An Apple spokesperson told 9to5Mac that the company is “pausing sales of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 from Apple.com starting 21 December, and from Apple retail locations after 24 December.”

“Should the order stand, Apple will continue to take all measures to return Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 to customers in the US as soon as possible.”
