On Monday, Sept. 2, the United States will celebrate Labor Day to honor the efforts of workers. Will banks and post offices be open during the holiday?
Every year, the United States celebrates Labor Day on the first Monday in September. In 2024, this day falls on Sept. 2.
In 1894, the U.S. Congress and President Grover Cleveland made Labor Day a federal holiday. As an official holiday, federal offices are required by law to close, giving government employees a paid day off.
Other establishments such as supermarkets and restaurants are usually open, but what about banks and post offices?

Are banks open on Labor Day in the United States?
Each financial institution decides whether to close for Labor Day. Most of the largest banks in the United States remain closed for the holiday, as they follow the Federal Reserve’s schedule.
Major banks, including Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Citibank, U.S. Bank, SunTrust Bank, Capital One, Citizens Bank, Santander Bank, BBVA Compass, among others, will be closed nationwide on Monday, Sept. 2.
Although most banks will be closed during the holiday, customers can still conduct basic banking transactions through online banking or by using their bank’s ATM.

Are post offices open on Labor Day in the United States?
As for post offices, the United States Postal Service or USPS will be closed on Labor Day.
DHL, FedEx and UPS offices will also be closed during the holiday, so pickup and delivery services will remain suspended. Normal services will resume on Tuesday.
As with other federal holidays, libraries, stock exchanges and public schools will be closed on Labor Day. On the other hand, supermarkets such as Walmart, Target and Sam’s Club, as well as restaurants, will remain open. However, Costco will remain closed on Labor Day and will operate under regular business hours on Tuesday.
