Authorities in Costa Rica give insight into Brett Gardner’s son’s probable cause of death
Authorities in Costa Rica provided a new theory on what could have caused the tragic death of Brett Gardner’s son.

Former Yankees player Brett Gardner and his wife Jessica announced the tragic death of their 14-year-old son, Miller, on March 21, 2025, while their family was on vacation in Costa Rica.
Authorities now believe that Miller may have died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning from a leak that contaminated his hotel room.
In the statement released by the New York Yankees, posted on behalf of Brett and Jessica, they explained that they did not yet have all the answers as to what caused Miller’s death but that he was not the only family member to fall ill.

With heavy hearts we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller. He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation. We have so many… pic.twitter.com/lBCBVmKGUe
“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep,” said the grieving parents.
Thankfully, more information was made available to the Gardner family over the weekend when Costa Rican Judicial Investigative Agency (OIJ) General Director Randall Zúñiga confirmed that high levels of carbon monoxide were identified in the hotel room where the family was staying.
The threat posed by carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide has no smell, which may come as a surprise to those with a gas stove. The smell one takes in when they turn on their gas stove is added to ensure that if there is a leak or the gas is left on, they are aware before the situation turns deadly.
