Bad news for air travelers: These airlines are suspending flights due to rising fuel costs | List of cancelled destinations

Rising jet fuel costs are prompting airlines to increase ticket prices, add surcharges, and reduce capacity, dropping unprofitable routes.

The U.S. and Iran war has thrown a wrench into travelers’ summer flight plans as airlines make adjustments to cope with the rising cost of jet fuel caused by the conflict. Ticket prices have shot up, almost 21% higher in April compared to the previous year, and carriers are slapping on surcharges as well as reducing capacity.

Although there were fears in April that Europe would run out of jet fuel with the head of the International Energy Agency warning that the continent had only a six-week supply remaining, the EU transport commissioner recently said that there is now no sign of a shortage. However, worldwide airlines have dropped two million seats from their schedules, doing away with routes that didn’t make economic sense.

Perhaps the most notable victim of these difficult times is Spirit Airlines, which was already struggling before fuel prices surged, when it ceased all operations in May.

Carriers United and Delta have both announced a roughly 5% decrease in capacity to meet FAA mandated reductions at 40 U.S. airports to increase safety and lessen delays. They’ve targeted underperforming routes in light of the higher cost of jet fuel.

American Airlines has nixed six routes for the time being, four out of LAX to Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Washington Dulles, and two departing from Charlotte Douglas to Ontario and Sacramento.

Likewise, Alaska Airlines, Air Canada, JetBlue, KLM, and Lufthansa have all announced route suspensions. In addition to schedule adjustments, Southwest is also tacking on a fuel surcharge for certain flights.
