Beware of butter, major brand recalled in the U.S. for nasty fecal contamination: these are affected batches in several states
A huge recall of butter has commenced in the United States after faeces were found.
Seriously, check your fridge. There’s poop in the butter.
That’s not a sleeper spy activation phrase. I really wish I was joking writing that line, but it’s true: a major butter brand has started a massive recall operation after coliform, a bacteria found in soil and animal faeces, has been detected in “elevated levels” in its products.
What brand of butter has been recalled and where?
The dairy spread in question is Cabot Creamery 8oz Extra Creamy Premium Butter, and it’s the Sea Salted version. The food comes packaged as (2) 4oz sticks in cardboard shells and it’s UPC number is as follows: 0 78354 62038 0
Delish confirmed that the affected butter was distributed across Arkansas, Connecticut, Maine, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York and has a best-by date of September 9, 2025.
The bacteria in question does not, despite being found coming out of the back-end of beasts, cause illness. The worrying aspect of the discovery is that finding Coliform is indicative of low standards of cleanliness, and therefore an increased risk of more worrying disease-causing pathogens such as salmonella or E. coli.
