Bill Gates, businessman: “I choose a lazy person to do a hard job because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it”

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, business magnate, philanthropist, and the man known for his ever-present glasses, stands in contrast to the saying, “speak little, but speak decisively.” Gates speaks often, and almost always with conviction. More often than not, what this pioneer of modern technology says captures attention, sparks debate, and makes headlines.

But Gates has a lesser-known side. He champions what might seem like the nemesis of capitalism, the natural and historic enemy of hyper-productivity. The entrepreneur openly sympathizes with the lazy, the procrastinators, the task-delayers, and those who savor both their own time and that of others.

“I choose a lazy person to do a hard job because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it,” the magnate once said. But don’t be misled. In reality, Gates aligns himself with lazy people because they can help reduce costs.

The goal is not to work more, but to work better

In an era marked by a shortage of ingenuity, a “lazy” person avoids work not out of whim, but as a way to eliminate repetitive and unnecessary tasks. The “laziness” Gates refers to is not chronic neglect or a lack of commitment. Rather, it is an almost instinctive aversion to the unnecessary. It is, in essence, an allergy to inefficiency.

In a business world obsessed with productivity, this idea borders on heresy. For decades, the dominant model has rewarded tireless workers, those who pile up long hours and sacrifice rest in the name of efficiency. Yet Gates subtly suggests a reversal of values. The goal is not to work more, but to work better.
