The New York Police Department have released new pictures of the suspected gunman in the shocking murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Surveillance images from a hostel on the Upper West Side show the alleged killer’s entire face, with many believing the individual bears more than a passing resemblance to Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal, or even Timothée Chamalet.

Brian Thompson attack “targeted”

Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. local time. Thompson, 50, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m.

NYPD say the attack was targeted, with Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stating at a news conference the gunman was “lying in wait for several minutes” and that “many people passed the subject”.

Full-face images a major breakthrough

The authorities have yet to identify the killer, who fled on an e-bike and was last spotted entering Central Park at 6:48 a.m. on Wednesday. They have, however, collected a cell phone, a candy wrapper, a water bottle and a used coffee cup, which they hope will lead them to the suspect.

The release of the latest images could prove to be a major breakthrough, with the presumed gunman’s face now fully visible. Previous CCTV footage and pictures of the man had shown him wearing a mask, making identification much more complicated.

Mysterious “deny, defend, depose” message on bullets

After the attack, detectives also discovered that the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” were written on three of the shell casings found at the scene. At present, officials are still working to determine whether they were part of a deliberate message sent by the shooter, what they could mean and if they could suggest what his motive was.

Some users on social media have called attention to how similar the words are to a book on the exploitative nature of the American healthcare system, titled “Delay, Deny, Defend: Why insurance companies don’t pay claims and what you can do about it”.
