Nutrition specialist Blanca Martín has shared a video on her social media warning about a protein-related deficiency that can be hidden behind normal iron levels: low ferritin. “If you are experiencing hair loss, fatigue, or brain fog, you may have low ferritin levels,” she explains.

There are several causes that can lead to low ferritin levels, including blood loss due to menstruation, absorption problems such as Crohn’s disease or celiac disease, an inadequate diet with low iron intake, or situations like pregnancy and breastfeeding.

To address this deficiency, the first step is to seek care from a health care professional, who will likely recommend iron supplements. However, not all supplements are appropriate, and self-medication should never be an option. A professional must determine, based on an accurate diagnosis, which supplement is best for each individual case.

If the problem persists, the patient may eventually develop what is known as iron-deficiency anemia. This condition can cause cardiovascular problems, fatigue, shortness of breath, intestinal health issues, and changes in the skin and mucous membranes. It can also lead to symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, irritability, and persistent headaches.
