Update:

The Oval Office meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump was defined above all by the tension that ultimately escalated into a heated argument, sparking widespread shock around the world.

Words that could have become physical

The war of words wasn’t the only standout element of the encounter — according to Patrycia Centeno, a journalist and expert in political aesthetics and body language, the non-verbal communication was just as telling. “It’s a miracle they didn’t come to blows,” she said.

Based on her analysis, the gesture repeated most often throughout the argument was the raised index finger. “It can express accusation, threat or command. Trump used it with Zelenskyy in every variation — you’re the one to blame, watch yourself, and you’ll do exactly as I say.”

The tap on the arm gesture

Zelenskyy’s constant replies prompted Trump to give him a “tap on the arm,” which Centeno described as far less subtle than the one Emmanuel Macron famously delivered. “It’s a ‘STOP’ gesture — the kind you see right before a fight breaks out. The difference lies in their facial expressions: Trump’s filled with hatred, while Macron’s was calm.”

As for Vice President J.D. Vance, she noted that he tugged at his tie — a phallic symbol — before confronting Zelenskyy. “It’s the equivalent of grabbing his crotch to mark his territory, a highly testosterone-charged move,” she explained.

According to the expert, Zelenskyy appeared deeply uncomfortable and made efforts to calm himself — or even hold back — through deep sighs and frequent glances at the ceiling. At the same time, he repeatedly turned his gaze away and wrinkled his nose to show disgust. The way he leaned one leg forward suggested that, “more than once,” he was ready to get up and walk out. His crossed arms signaled defensiveness and opposition.

Attempts to ease tensions

At points, the Ukrainian president also tried to ease tensions by making small, self-effacing gestures, leaning toward the vice president to show he wasn’t the enemy. “He even tried to appeal to their emotions, placing his hand over his chest and heart, but it was all in vain,” Centeno concluded.

In the end, Trump didn’t even see his guest out — Zelenskyy left the White House alone. “Diplomatically speaking, that’s completely unheard of,” the protocol expert added.
