Can Donald Trump be sued over Memorial Day attack on E. Jean Carroll?
It can sometimes feel like barely a day goes by without the former president of the United States pointing his ire in the direction of someone.
When an important holiday arrives, we often expect a warm celebratory message from our leaders. Well, while that may be the norm for many, Donald Trump has a different slant to his sharing of good moments, possibly because he’s not having the greatest of one right now.
Trump’s angry Memorial Day post
“Happy Memorial Day to All,” began the former US president on Truth Social in what initially seemed like a positive vibe, before adding, “including the Human Scum that is working so hard to destroy our Once Great Country, & to the Radical Left, Trump Hating Federal Judge in New York that presided over, get this, TWO separate trials, that awarded a woman, who I never met before (a quick handshake at a celebrity event, 25 years ago, doesn’t count!), 91 MILLION DOLLARS for ‘DEFAMATION.’”
I hope you took a big breath before reading that as that was all his own punctuation choice. And he went on.
“She didn’t know when the so-called event took place - sometime in the 1990′s - never filed a police report, didn’t have to produce the “dress” that she threatened me with (it showed negative!), & sung my praises in the first half of her CNN Interview with Alison Cooper, but changed her tune in the second half - Gee, I wonder why (UNDER APPEAL!)? The Rape charge was dropped by a jury! Or Arthur Engoron, the N.Y. State Wacko Judge who fined me almost 500 Million Dollars (UNDER APPEAL) for DOING NOTHING WRONG, used a Statute that has never been used before, gave me NO JURY, Mar-a-Lago at $18,000,000 - Now for Merchan!”
As you may remember, a jury in New York found the Republican nomination for president in this year’s elections liable for defamation and sexual abuse against Carroll. He was then found liable for defamation about comments made about her claims. Trump’s costs for this total just over $88 million dollars, and he’s also fighting one of his other battles in court right now. So maybe we can understand why he was less than cheery on Memorial Day.
Following his textual tirade, Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, suggested that further legal action could be taken, reported by Maggie Haberman for the New York Times. “We have said several times since the last jury verdict in January that all options were on the table. And that remains true today -- all options are on the table.”
