Mega Millions is one of the most popular and attractive lotteries in the United States because its jackpots reach hundreds of millions of dollars. Now that the jackpot has soared to its highest-ever total of $1.55 billion, more people are more likely than ever to buy a ticket to get a shot at becoming a billionaire.

After no winner was chosen for the Aug. 4 draw, the jackpot became the largest in the history of this draw. Given the lure of this huge fortune, some might wonder if undocumented immigrants can also buy tickets, win and collect prizes.

US Lottery: Can undocumented immigrants collect Mega Millions or Powerball prizes?

Last year, in an interview with Univisión, Jorge de la Cruz, spokesperson for the California Lottery, said that you do not need to be a US citizen to participate in a lottery or collect a prize, so undocumented immigrants and non-residents would be able to claim their winnings.

According to the Mega Millions lottery website, “US visitors can always purchase tickets for our game at a US lottery retailer while visiting the United States; you don’t need to be a resident to win.”

However, it is important to clarify that tickets are not sold outside of the United States.

“Mega Millions is not affiliated with or endorses any company that claims to sell our tickets worldwide, online or otherwise. If you choose to do business with one of these companies, you do so at your own risk. Mega Millions rules prohibit the purchase of tickets by agents representing players in other jurisdictions,” according to the lottery.

To claim a prize, the lottery ticket must have been purchased in the United States. In the case of undocumented immigrants, it is necessary to have an identification document issued by the country of origin, such as a passport. There are also some states that require the winner to present a tax identification number.

If you buy a Mega Millions lottery ticket, it’s important to check the rules for collecting prizes in your state.

When are the Mega Millions draws held?

Mega Millions can be played in almost all states in the United States, with the exception of Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah. It can also be played in the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands. These drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m. ET. The cost of the ticket is $2.
