Chess champion Garry Kasparov tells it like it is: “Even Trump‘s biggest fans can’t believe he’s this stupid”
Russian chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov sounded off on Donald Trump following his latest statement concerning President Putin and the war in Ukraine.
The war in Ukraine lingers on as Russia continues attacks on their neighboring country, and the war on the ground has transformed in a war of words. Now one of Russia’s most famous athletes has weighed in not just on Ukraine but on President Donald Trump.
Trump: leaders want to see peace
The Russian-Ukraine conflict has been an ongoing battle since 2014, but in February of 2022 it turned into a full scale war with Russia’s president Valdimir Putin seemingly unwilling to give in until complete control of the country is surrendered.
At various times during his presidency, Donald Trump has weighed in and even met with both Putin and Ukranian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. His latest remarks seemed to have sparked some outrage, especially to those who are close to the situation like Russian chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov.
In a press conference on Friday evening Trump said, “The leaders want to see peace. President Putin, I believe wants to see peace, and Zelenskyy wants to see peace. President Zelenskyy has to get everything he needs because he’s going to have to get ready to sign something, and I think he’s working hard to get that done.”
Kasparov: Putin doesn’t want peace
The grandmaster responded to Trump’s statements, claiming that this we have heard this all before and he’s not buying the fact that Putin wants to reach a peace agreement. “Even Trump‘s biggest fans can’t believe he’s this stupid. Putin doesn’t want peace, Putin wants Ukraine. That’s why he started the war and chooses to continue it every day. Rewarding Russia for its genocidal aggression only promises more, and Trump is fine with that,” said Kasparov.
The former FIDE chess rating record holder was put on a Russian list of terrorists and extremists in March of last year. He has repeatedly spoken out against Putin, while encoring the West to continue it’s support of Ukraine.
Kasparov was the top ranked player in the world for a total of 255 months, but has been out of the professional chess scene since 2005. He continues to be active in the sport, Since retiring he has focused more on his political activism and writing. He wrote a book in 2007 called How Life Imitates Chess and most recently served as a consultant for the Netflix miniseries The Queen’s Gambit.
