College student missing in Barcelona: What we know about the search for the 20-year-old University of Alabama student
Jimmy Gracey, a 20-year-old student from Illinois, was last seen at Barcelona’s Shoko nightclub early on Tuesday morning.
A search is underway for a 20-year-old American man who has been reported missing in Barcelona, Spain, after a night out in the city earlier this week.
What we know so far
In a social-media post, the mother of Jimmy Gracey, a University of Alabama student from Illinois, said her son was last seen in the early hours of Tuesday morning, at Barcelona’s Shoko nightclub.
The beachside Shoko is located in the Port Olímpic area of Barcelona, a city that is the capital of Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region.
“My son […] is visiting friends in Barcelona who are studying abroad,” Therese Gracey wrote on Facebook on Tuesday. “They went to Shoko last night. The police have his phone but he didn’t make it back to the air bnb. Has anyone see him?”
Therese Gracey added: “He was wearing a white t shirt and dark pants (probably joggers). He wears a gold chain with a rhinestone cross. He was last seen by his friend at Shoko around 3 am. The friend was leaving but Jimmy stayed.”
Catalan police “conducting initial checks”
In a statement issued to media outlets, the Mossos d’Esquadra - Catalonia’s police force - said they are “conducting the initial checks and have taken a report in an open investigation”.
According to reports in the Spanish media, the Mossos have refused to confirm or deny Therese Gracey’s assertion that they are in possession of Jimmy Gracey’s cell phone.
Gracey’s family told NBC News that he was in the Dutch capital Amsterdam at the weekend, before arriving in Barcelona on Monday morning. He is described as being 6ft 1in tall, and weighing 175 pounds.
