Just as Joe Biden announces his intention to seek another term as president, some GOP leaders on Capitol Hill believe that new evidence from a “very brave” (according to Representative Tim Burchett (R-TN)) IRS whistleblower may warrant an impeachment trial. Now that the Republicans control the House of Representatives, such a motion could be brought to the floor.

During the last Congress, Georgia representative Marjorie Taylor Greene had introduced a resolution to impeach President Biden for his “abuse of power by enabling bribery and other high crimes and misdemeanors.”

Accusations of “very illegal” behavior are heard across the American right

Rep. Burchett told Maria Bartiromo that an IRS agent reported to Republican leaders that an investigation into President Biden’s son Hunter was rife with conflicts of interest. “This is just the very tip of the iceberg,” said the GOP leader, who went on to argue that if the president was involved in illegal conduct or “high crimes,” Congress would have no choice but to impeach.

Grover Norquist, the president of the Americans for Tax Reform, a conservative think tank that advocates against tax increases of any kind, was also stopped by Bartiromo’s show. Though he did not provide any real evidence, Norquist said that the information obtained was “very bad, very troubling, and very illegal.

To date, no articles of impeachment or resolutions to impeach have been presented in the House of Representatives. While for the Republican base, this power play may work, it is unlikely to foster support from independent and moderate voters who are tired of political infighting. If articles are not introduced in the coming weeks, it could be that the party leadership does not see impeachment as a winner for their party politically, even if their base would support the symbolic move since Democrats remain in control of the Senate.
