The creator of Famous Amos Cookies, Wally Amos, has passed away at the age of 88. According to his family, he died peacefully with his wife Carol by his side.

Amos died of complications caused by dementia, according to a statement by his children, Sarah, Michal, Gregory, and Shawn Amos.

“With his Panama hat, kazoo, and boundless optimism, Famous Amos was a great American success story, and a source of Black pride,” they said.

“He was a true original Black American hero,” they said of their father.

Famous Amos is a well-known brand of cookies, particularly famous for its bite-sized chocolate chip cookies. Amos founded the enterprise in 1975, setting up his bakery in Los Angeles, California.

Amos was a talent agent before starting his cookie business, using a family recipe to bake his goods.

The first Famous Amos store opened on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, where it gained popularity and attracted a celebrity clientele.

Famous Amos gained wide recognition throughout the country, with Amos becoming a well-known figure for his upbeat personality and promotional efforts. He made a cameo appearance on the hit comedy show “The Office” as well as other television programs.

Due to financial difficulties experienced by the business, Amos sold the brand in 1988. The company has changed ownership several times since then. The brand is currently owned by Ferrero, an Italian confectionery company known for brands like Nutella and Ferrero Rocher.
