Update:

In late January, the US Food and Drug Administration announced that the dog food provider, Blue Ridge Beef, would recall nearly 6,000 pounds of their signature ‘2 lb log Natural Mix’ after a possible Salmonella contamination incident was identified within the supply chain. This is the third Salmonella-linked recall issued by the company since December of last year.

If you are a buyer of this dog chow, you will want to be on the lookout for Lot Number N25/12/31, which, according to the health agency, “are stamped in the clips on the end of the chubs/bags.” Additionally, if you have access to the UPC Number, the recalled batch will fall under 854298001054. According to the recall, the company sold most of the contained units in:

  • Virginia,
  • Maryland,
  • Pennsylvania,
  • Connecticut,
  • Massachusetts,
  • New York,
  • Tennessee,
  • Rhode Island.

The risk Salmonella poses to your pets

Salmonella is a bacteria that impacts people and some pets, including dogs. In addition to recalling the food to protect the nation’s pets, it is critical that owners with recalled food throw it away as the bacteria could transfer to your hands when serving your furry friend. Though the vast majority of people infected with Salmonella recover just fine, the illness caused by the bacteria is no fun. One can expect symptoms ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to nausea and cramping.

The symptoms your pets may show

If you have fed this brand of chow to your pet, the FDA says to be on the lookout for the following symptoms:

  • Lethargy
  • Diarrhea, which could contain blood
  • Fever
  • Vomiting.
