Update:

No one likes to spend anymore time at the DMV than they have to. So, a recent announcement from the California Department of Motor Vehicles will come as music to certain customers ears. In order to help speed up people’s visits and improve the agency’s service the California DMV has done away with the written knowledge test for certain customers who need to renew their driver’s license.

All drivers who are 70 and older had been required to take the written test when they renewed their driver’s license. However, that was “a policy requirement and not a requirement of law,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon in a press release.

Now all Californians renewing their driver’s license with a clean driving record will only have to go to the DMV office for the vision exam and get their photo updated. Furthermore they can fill out their application online to reduce the amount of time that it takes finish the process at the DMV office.

Who will still have to take a written test to get a driver’s license in California?

The requirement to take a written test will still be mandatory for first time drivers and new California residents. Additionally, those renewal customers of all ages with poor driving records must take the written knowledge test in order to get their driver’s license renewed. The DMV stipulates that drivers whose records meet any of the following conditions are still required to take the knowledge test:

  • Two or more accidents during the two years immediately preceding the expiration of the license.
  • Three or more accidents during the three years immediately preceding the expiration of the license.
  • A DUI suspension during the two years immediately preceding the expiration date of the license.
  • A violation point count greater than one within the two years immediately preceding the expiration date of the license.

The California DMV recommends that drivers who have to take the written test should do so online. This will significantly reduce the amount of time that they will need to spend in an office and for others as well.

Any drivers with points on their record looking to renew their license will be eligible for the eLearning course, available in English, Spanish and Chinese.
