Former President Donald Trump took to Truth Social earlier this week to tease an upcoming announcement to his followers. As the first person to announce his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election, Trump might have been expected to offer more detail on his upcoming campaign, but that was not the case.

“I’m doing my first official Donald J. Trump NFT collection right here and right now,” he told followers, in a slightly stilted advertisement video released online.

“They’re called Trump Digital Trading Cards. These cards feature some of the really incredible artwork pertaining to my life. You can collect your Trump Digital Cards just like a baseball card or other collectibles.”

As well as the nun-fungible token, buyers will also be entered in “sweepstakes” to win a number of Trump-related prizes. The website claims this could include a Zoom call with the former President, free drinks at Mar-a-Lago and a golfing experience at one of his resorts.

The announcement was met with ridicule online as many labelled Trump’s latest venture a scam. Many pointed to previous instances where Trump’s campaign team has attempted to squeeze extra donations through dubious means.

How much is a Trump NFT?

Trump has released an “exclusive” collection of 45,000 NFTs on his new website, Trump Digital Trading Cards. They are minted on Polygon and can be purchased used traditional fiat currencies or with Ether (ETH) cryptocurrency.

They will initially go on sale for $99, something that Trump claimed represented good value.

“[They] are $99 … which doesn’t sound like very much for what you’re getting,” Trump said. “Buy one and you’ll be joining a very exclusive community.”

When you go to purchase a Trump NFT on the official site, buyers are greeted with a pop-up promotion claiming to offer a guaranteed ticket for an upcoming gala dinner, attended by the former President himself.

However to secure this prize you would have to buy 45 NFTs, in a single order, costing a total of $4,455.

What do the Trump NFT trading cards look like?

The images made public so far all focus on the former President and are framed in the style of a baseball card. However unlike most collectable trading cards, these feature the 45th President of the United States in a number of bizarre poses.

In one he is pictured riding an elephant; another sees him dressed as an astronaut in aviator sunglasses; while one shows him ripping open his suit and firing lasers from his eyes. Something for everyone.

Trump, who has previously admitted that he is “not a fan” of cryptocurrency, is clearly eager to promote his new digital wares online. In another post on Truth Social he wrote:

“GET YOUR CARDS NOW! Only $99 each! Would make a great Christmas gift. Don’t Wait. They will be gone, I believe, very quickly!”

Quite how successful these hundred-dollar digital trading cards actually prove to be, remains to be seen.
