Double Social Security payments in September 2023: who will receive them and payment dates

Supplemental Security Income recipients will receive two payments in September.

According to SSA’s schedule, SSI payments are sent on the first day of each month. However, if the first day falls on a weekend, the payment will be sent in advance. If the first of the month falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the payment for that month is sent the Friday before during the previous month. This will be the case in September.

Since the first day of October is a Sunday, the payment for that month is advanced and sent on the last Friday of September.

SSI recipients will receive their September payment on the first day of the month. In addition, they will receive a second payment on Friday, September 29, which is their payment for the month of October.

That is why in September, SSI recipients will receive two payments, but in October they will receive none, since it would have already been advanced.

Payments are sent via direct deposit to those who have provided a bank account to SSA, or via regular mail, which may take more days to arrive.

Supplemental Security Income payment amounts

Average Supplemental Security Income payments are around $550 per month. The maximum monthly benefit is $914 for an individual and $1,371 for a married couple where both spouses are eligible for the program.

It should be noted that SSI payments are calculated on an individual basis, so the amount varies from beneficiary to beneficiary depending on various factors.
