Dr. Seuss, American author, from ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’: “Congratulations. Today is your day, you’re off to great places”
Graduation season in the United States is gearing up and those donning caps and gowns will be entering a new chapter in their life and off to great places.
Dr. Seuss, the author of beloved classic children’s books like ‘The Cat in the Hat’ and ‘How The Grinch Stole Christmas!’, published ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’ the year prior to his passing. Although the latter book uses the same whimsical poetry style as the other two books, it contains a powerful and inspirational message for those navigating life and encourages readers to be resilient in the face of its ups and downs.
Since coming out in 1990, ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’ has become a favorite among teachers as well as a popular graduation gift for students of all ages.
Dr. Seuss believes you can move mountains
Theodor Seuss Geisel’s inspirational message kicks off with “Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!” He tells readers that they are at the helm and can go in any direction that they choose because “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.”
He notes that you may not have a specific street that you want to follow, but in that case “you’ll head straight out of town.” Out and about things will likely start happening, “and frequently do.” With any luck you’ll find yourself among the high fliers, soaring to new heights.
However, Dr. Suess admits that the “you can get all hung up in a prickle-ly perch.” And once you get yourself out of the lurch, chances are that you’ll find yourself in a slump, and it’s not much fun, nor easily undone. And in the confusion of finding your way through the “weirdish wild space” he fears you will end up in “The Waiting Place.”
End the end though, “somehow you’ll escape,” and once again moving forward, riding high, “ready for anything under the sky.” You will likely still encounter roughly patches as you continue along the path of life and “meet things that scare you right out of your pants.”
Dr. Seuss cautions to “step with care and great tact” remembering all the time that life is one great balancing act. He advises to “never foget to be dexterous and deft” and you’ll always put the right foot forward.
“And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.),” he wrote. “Kid, you’ll move mountains!”
