Update:

Elon Musk is no longer a “special government employee” after resigning from his role and being seen off with a warm press event where he appeared alongside President Trump last Friday.

However, just a few days later, as negotiations over the GOP spending bill, dubbed by the White House as the “big beautiful bill,” Musk is voicing his opposition.

Last week, the president’s billionaire backer expressed disappointment over the size of the bill and the fact that it would increase the national deficit. Republican leaders on Capitol Hill, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, have pushed back, arguing that estimates from public and private organizations are flawed because they fail to account for the massive economic gains the bill is expected to generate.

But Musk, who had been granted access to review the budgets of various government agencies and implement sweeping cuts to contracts and staffing, isn’t convinced.

Musk calls the bill a “disgusting abomination”

On Tuesday, he posted on X that he could no longer remain silent about his opposition to the bill.

“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” reads the post. The CEO also said that those who voted should be ashamed of themselves and that deep down, they know what they did was wrong.

Musk’s concerns over the increases in spending are not new and are not dissimilar to the concerns of some factions of the GOP caucus. Nevertheless, the party has been told to fall in line as the bill includes many of the campaign promises.

In a separate follow-up post, Musk pointed out that the bill also increases the budget deficit (i.e, the difference between the amount of money spent by the government and the amount of revenue it takes in). The billionaire, who has received federal contracts through SpaceX, takes issue with the large amount of spending included in the Republican bill, but less with the fact that it contains substantive tax cuts for top earners.

"It will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America[n] citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt," warned Musk. Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie, who has been called a grandstander by Trump, responded to Musk’s post that he was right. Though Massie had initially said he would vote against the package, ultimately, he folded.

Independent Senator Bernie Sanders also supports Musk’s characterization of the bill, on different grounds.

“We shouldn’t give $664 billion in tax breaks to the 1%,” argued Sanders in a post on X. Sanders also highlighted an independent review of the legislation, which estimated that as many as 13.7 million people could lose access to Medicaid coverage.
