Each month, the Social Security Administration sends money to a variety of people, including retired workers, survivors, and those who receive health benefits such as Social Security Disability Insurance and the Supplemental Security Income.

In 2023, thanks to the 8.7% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase, average SSI payments are around $550 a month. The maximum monthly benefit is up to $914 for an individual and $1,371 for a married couple, where both spouses are eligible for the program.

SSI payments are sent monthly by SSA. However, some states supplement the federal SSI benefit with additional payments. Here are the states where these payments are granted and when they are sent.

When are extra SSI payments sent?

According to the Social Security Administration, these supplemental payments are sent out about the same time as federal payments. According to SSA’s schedule, Employment Security benefits and Supplemental Income payments are sent out on the first day of each month, so the extra payments would arrive during the first few days of the month.

However, there are some exceptions. When the first day of the month falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the SSI payment is advanced and sent on the last Friday of the previous month. This happened this month: because July 1st was a Saturday, this month’s SSI payments were sent out on June 30th.

To have an estimate of when the extra payments would be received, here is the calendar of SSI payments until December.

  • August 1
  • September 1
  • September 29 (payment corresponding to the month of October)
  • November 1
  • December 1
  • December 29 (payment corresponding to the month of January 2024)
