Fans react to White Men Can’t Jump remake

Jack Harlow took on a potentially daunting role in the new streetball-hustling version of the Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson classic.

White Men Can't Jump

Remaking a classic movie is always risky and doubts were raised when talk emerged that the iconic 1992 offering White Men Can’t Jump was up for a modern take.

In the original, Billy Hoyle, a former college basketball player, earns his livelihood by outplaying streetballers throughout Los Angeles who underestimate his abilities due to him being white, clumsily, and purposefully, going against all the norms of the court. But “it is hard goddam work making something this pretty look like a chump,” he explains.

Sidney Deane, an exceptionally skilled yet arrogant player, loses in embarrassing fashion at the hands of Billy not once, but twice. They then team up and... well you should know the rest.

It was a dream team, both from a skill perspective on the court and from an acting chemistry point of view, between Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes. Step forward Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow, the rapper making his screen debut, to try and live up to high expectations.

Filmaker Calmatic, real name Charles Kidd II, spoke ahead of the movie being released about the idea of bringing it to life.

“The opportunity to reimagine something how I would want to create it, that’s a hard opportunity for any creator to turn down. I get overwhelmed at times, me being from L.A. It’s like I want the world to know, ‘This is where I grew up, this is where I got into my first fight, this is where I had a crush on a girl.’

“I just love the city and all it has to offer. The real L.A. place like Leimert Park, Crenshaw, Watts, the Jungles, those are places that mean a lot to me. And I wanted to share them with the world.”

The 2023 remake of White Men Can’t Jump hit screens on 19 May on Hulu and viewers were quick to share their views on social media...
