Farcia Harvey, slow traveller, on finding the right place to visit: “You can have a great time in the middle of nowhere”
There has always been a desire by many to travel to famous cities or exotic locales, but a growing trend is bucking that, choosing unlikely destinations.
Social media has helped people put ever more destinations on their bucket list and cheap flights have made it easier to fulfil those desires. However, this has had a knock-on effect of creating overtourism taking some of the magic away from those locations, even prompting some to be put on ‘No Lists’ discouraging travel to them.
Add to that, the feeling by some travelers that they need to see all of rash of cities, or even a country, on a whirlwind tour over just a matter of days. Whether for both reasons separate or combined, a new trend has been gaining traction, slow travel, spending more time in one place and staying off the beaten path.
Slow travelers having “a great time in the middle of nowhere”
Farcia Harvey is just one of those who is embracing the concept of slow travel. While the 27-year-old has checked off several top destinations from her bucket list including Barcelona, Madrid and New York City, even venturing to New Orleans during Mardi Gras, an unlikely destination has taken top spot for her favorite, Cincinnati.
In an Instagram video she posted “everyone visit Cincinnati, Ohio or else!!!!” The Nashville resident visited the Queen City in 2024 for a birthday trip with friends.
She told CNBC: “It’s one of the best memories I have for my birthday, and it’s something that to this day, me and my friends still talk about.”
Despite it’s less glamourous status, the city has “simpler and slower luxuries that bigger cities may not offer,” noted the outlet. These included the downtown’s free streetcar and Riverfront walking paths as well as the Brown Bear bakery and Somerset outdoor bar in the case of Harvey.
“A lot of people truly believe in order to be well traveled, they have to see Europe, they have to see Africa, all of these other places,” she reflected. But for those who broaden their horizons about what locations are worthy of visiting she told CNBC: “You can have a great time in the middle of nowhere.”
