Dr Anthony Fauci. Considered by many as the adult in the room during the covid-19 pandemic amid a chaotic Donald Trump presidency, and by others as an untrustworthy non-MAGA attention grabber with a dark secret to hide. That latter conspiracy never lost its strength and in his testimony before the House Oversight and Accountability Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, the former U.S. infectious disease expert firmly denied accusations of suppressing the theory that covid-19 originated from a lab leak in China. This marked Fauci’s first public address on the allegations since a 14-hour closed-door hearing in January.

What has Fauci said about the China lab and covid leak?

Dr Fauci, who retired in December 2022 after a distinguished 54-year career at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), including 38 years as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), maintained that he never influenced research regarding the origins of the virus. He reiterated his belief that animal-to-human transmission is the most plausible source of the pandemic.

“I’ve always been very clear that the concept of a lab leak is not inherently a conspiracy theory,” Fauci said. “What is conspiratorial are the distortions of that topic, such as claims that I directed the CIA to suppress lab leak discussions.”

Why is Dr Fauci being questioned?

The subcommittee has been investigating the origins of covid-19, uncovering emails suggesting top NIH officials attempted to evade public record laws by deleting correspondence and using private emails. These emails implicate some officials, including David Morens, a longtime Fauci aide, in potentially illicit activities to hide public records.

Fauci downplayed his association with Morens, noting their offices were in separate buildings and expressing uncertainty about whether Morens reported to him directly. Fauci also denied ever using private emails for government business, despite Morens’ testimony that he might have sent such emails to Fauci’s personal account.

Addressing the issue, Fauci asserted that Morens had repeatedly violated NIAID policy and denied any efforts to circumvent Freedom of Information Act requests.

Death threats for Fauci took their toll

As well as responding to questions around the various theories and links to Morens, Fauci also highlighted the personal toll of the accusations, describing harassment and death threats directed at him and his family. These threats emerged after he became a target for many Republican lawmakers due to his pandemic policies and support for covid-19 vaccines, alongside unsubstantiated claims of his involvement in a massive cover-up related to the pandemic’s origins. The investigation continiues.
