FDA recall alert: Friendly’s recalls mislabeled ice cream in three states

If you’ve picked up a 48-ounce tub of Friendly’s Vanilla Bean ice cream in Maryland, Virginia, or Pennsylvania recently, it might not be what you think. The company says a small batch – just 324 cartons – has been pulled from shelves after it turned out they were filled with Cookies & Cream ice cream but packaged in Vanilla Bean cartons.

That wouldn’t normally be a big deal, except the Cookies & Cream version contains soy and wheat, which are not listed on the Vanilla Bean label. For anyone with allergies to either, that could mean a serious or even life-threatening reaction.

Which ice cream tubs are part of the recall?

Only one very specific product is affected:

• 48 fl. oz. Friendly’s Vanilla Bean ice cream cartons
• With a Friendly’s Cookies & Cream lid
• Best by date: 11/26/25 (printed on the lid)

No other Friendly’s products are involved.

The affected tubs were distributed via UNFI to stores in:

• Maryland
• Virginia
• Pennsylvania

How the mix-up happened

Friendly’s says the error was spotted when a limited number of Cookies & Cream batches were accidentally put into Vanilla Bean cartons without updating the allergen information. No illnesses have been reported so far, and the company is working with the FDA on the recall.
