Did you have an active Facebook account between 2007 and 2022? If your answer is yes, and you reside in the United States, then it is possible that you were the victim of a data breach by Meta’s social network and this means that you are eligible to claim part of a million-dollar compensation.

In March of this year, a federal judge in California approved $725 million in compensation from Facebook, the result of a privacy class action lawsuit in which Cambridge Analytica - a firm that supported Donald Trump’s successful presidential campaign in 2016 - was accused of obtaining personal information from millions of users to contact voters.

While Meta said it was never in the wrong, a spokesperson revealed that the company agreed to the severance payment because it was in the best interest of the community and shareholders. That said, the money is intended for those users who claim that the platform gave access to third parties of their data without their consent.

Who is eligible for Facebook compensation?

Any resident of the United States who had an active Facebook account between 24 May 2007 and 22 December 2022 can claim part of the compensation.

How to claim part of the Facebook million-dollar compensation?

To claim part of the payment, affected users must complete a claim form on the website facebookuserprivacysettlement.com. There you will be asked for your full name, email and postal address, as well as all information associated with your Facebook account. You must also enter a form of payment so that the corresponding money is deposited directly.

Deadline for Facebook claims

The deadline to request compensation is 25 August 2023.

As it stands, it is unknown how much money the affected users will receive, as the total amount of compensation ($725 million) will be divided by the number of people who present the claim; that is, the more users fill out the form, the lower each payment will be since the money must be divided among all of them.
