Update:

Millions of Americans on Social Security retirement benefits are scheduled to be sent this month’s payment today, March 12. The same goes for many recipients of disability and survivors' pay.

When are Social Security checks being sent in March 2025?

Each month, the bulk of the U.S.’s Social Security recipients receive their money on one of three Wednesdays, as part of a staggered distribution system that determines a recipient’s payment date by their date of birth.

These payments begin on the second Wednesday of each month. March’s second Wednesday is today, and will see Social Security checks paid out to beneficiaries born between the first and the 10th of each month.

March 2025’s staggered Wednesday payment schedule in full:

  • Wednesday, March 12: Beneficiaries born from 1st to 10th of month
  • Wednesday, March 19: Beneficiaries born from 11th to 20th of month
  • Wednesday, March 26: Beneficiaries born from 21st to 31st of month

Who is paid outside of the Wednesday schedule?

The Wednesday payments timeline does not apply to recipients of retirement, disability or survivors' pay who began getting their checks before May 1997.

This group receives its money on the third of every month - regardless of their birthday - unless that date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday. In March, therefore, these beneficiaries were due to be paid on Monday 3rd.

In addition, recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a separate program that does not depend on payment of Social Security taxes, always get their check on the first of the month, except for weekends or holidays. As the first of this month was a Saturday, March’s SSI payment was to be made on Friday, February 28.

Some people collect both SSI and regular Social Security benefits; if so, they should have got the former on March 3 and the latter on Feb. 28.

You can check out the SSA’s full 2025 payment schedule on the agency’s website.

How much money are Social Security retirement beneficiaries paid?

Retired workers, who as of January 2025 represented just over 70% of the U.S.’s 73 million Social Security recipients, receive approximately $2,000 a month on average.

To be precise, the average monthly retirement check in the U.S. is currently $1,978, according to figures shared by the SSA. The top monthly check for a retired worker is $5,108.

How big a payment do other Social Security recipients get?

According to the SSA’s most recent figures, disabled workers get $1,580 a month on average, while recipients of survivors’ benefits are paid an average of $1,546 per month. In the SSI program, meanwhile, the average monthly payment stands at $714 at present, per the SSA.
