Scientists drill an Alpine glacier and uncover an intact 2,000-year record of history

Glaciers do far more than help scientists reconstruct past temperatures. Under the right conditions, they also preserve an extraordinary environmental archive, trapping tiny particles carried through the atmosphere over centuries. By studying layers of ancient ice in the Alps, researchers have been able to trace both natural events and human activity long before modern scientific instruments existed.

One of the world’s most valuable sites for this research is Colle Gnifetti, high on the Monte Rosa massif along the Swiss-Italian border. Sitting at around 14,600 feet (4,450 meters) above sea level, the glacier’s unique conditions have preserved an exceptional record stretching back roughly 2,000 years. Ice cores extracted from the site reveal evidence of everything from major wildfires to changes in Europe’s mining industry.

Each snowfall captures microscopic traces of dust, pollen, ash, charcoal and metals floating in the atmosphere. As fresh snow accumulates, these particles become buried and compressed into ice, creating a chronological record that scientists can analyze to determine what was happening across Europe – and sometimes much farther afield – when each layer formed.

How glaciers recorded Europe’s industrial past

One of the clearest examples comes from traces of lead preserved in the ice. Shifts in atmospheric lead concentrations mirror changes in silver and lead mining and smelting across Europe, as metal particles released during production were carried by the wind before settling onto the glacier.

This record has helped researchers identify economic changes that written historical sources alone cannot fully explain. Studies at Colle Gnifetti have detected evidence of renewed silver and lead production in Western Europe during the seventh century.

The glacier also captured one of history’s greatest catastrophes. During the Black Death, between about 1349 and 1353, atmospheric lead levels fell dramatically. As the plague devastated Europe’s population, mining and metal production slowed sharply, leaving a distinct signature frozen in the ice.

Wildfires, drought and volcanic eruptions frozen in time

The glacier preserves more than metals. Tiny charcoal particles reveal changes in vegetation, farming and large-scale fires throughout history.

One of the most striking examples dates to 1540, when Europe experienced one of its worst droughts in centuries. Historical records describe rivers and lakes shrinking, widespread crop failures and major wildfires stretching from the British Isles to southern Italy and from the Iberian Peninsula to Poland.

The same event appears clearly in the Colle Gnifetti ice core, where researchers identified one of the largest pre-industrial wildfire signals ever recorded, with charcoal concentrations exceeding 4,800 particles per liter.

The glacier even contains evidence of distant volcanic eruptions. Powerful explosions can inject ash and aerosols high into the atmosphere, allowing them to travel thousands of miles before settling.

Among the key markers used to date the ice is the massive eruption of Iceland’s Eldgjá volcano between A.D. 934 and 939. Scientists have also identified particles linked to another major eruption around A.D. 536, matching material found in Greenland ice cores and helping build an even clearer timeline of Earth’s environmental history.
