A storm is forecast to develop before the end of this week along the Gulf Coast and potentially impact at least 20 states.

Residents in more than a dozen US states should prepare for the first large storm of 2024. The eastern US is to be affected by heavy rainfall in the south and significant snowfall in the north.

It has been two years since the last significant snowfall in the north-east. The last inch of snow that fell in New York City from a storm was on 13 February, 2022. For Washington D.C. this stretches back even further to 16 January, 2022.

Large rainfall and wind will likely cause travel disruption in the south. This will be caused by an area of low pressure on the Gulf Coast.

Which East Coast cities will see snow?

According to Fox Weather, people living in West Virginia to New England are likely to see snow. This would include:

  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia

Weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce said that “uncertainty remains high at this early stage given questions about the storm’s track and how much cold air will be available near the coast.”

Snowfall forecasting is among the most challenging tasks meteorologists face,” he continued. “That’s because of several factors that can be uncertain days ahead of a potential storm’s arrival.”

It remains to be seen how the storm will develop and if that snow does fall.
