Flash flood warnings for New Mexico and Arizona: These National Weather Service safety tips could save your life
The NWS has warned of “hail, isolated severe wind gusts, and localized flash flooding” in the Southwest across this week.
Resident in parts of New Mexico and Arizona have been warned to prepare for localized flash flooding this week as heavy rainfall is predicted across the Southwest.
The National Weather Service plays a key role in advising Americans about incoming dangerous weather, offering up-to-date updates across the country. But there are also safety tips that should be applied whenever you find yourself in a potentially dangerous situation.
A post from the NWS shares the risk posed by flash flooding, even after a moderate amount of rainfall: “Most flood fatalities occur in vehicles, and it only takes 12 inches of water to sweep a car away.”
“During a flood, small decisions like turning around and not driving through a flooded roadway, not driving around barricades, and delaying travel until conditions improve, can make a big impact on whether you keep your car...or even your life. Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
Heavy monsoon rains and tropical moisture surges have raised concern over flash flooding events across Arizona, New Mexico and neighboring states, underscoring how vulnerable the Southwest is during its rainy season. In Arizona, one tragic case occurred in Cochise County, where a driver was swept away in floodwaters while trying to cross a wash.
In New Mexico, the mountain community of Ruidoso has already been hit hard. In July torrential downpours overwhelmed the Rio Ruidoso, pushing it past 20 feet and washing entire homes away. At least three lives were lost, including two children, and dozens of residents were trapped in homes or vehicles before being rescued. The region’s steep terrain has made conditions even more dangerous, accelerating runoff and debris flows.
Meteorologists warn that additional rounds of heavy rain, fueled by lingering tropical storm conditions, could continue to pose flash-flood risks across the desert Southwest.
